When you have school-aged children, where you end up living can often depend on the quality of the school district in the area. Knowing what the district has to offer your children is as important a consideration as whether or not your building has built-in laundry facilities or other amenities. Families living in the Mayfield City School District should find out about the district’s schools, athletic programs, and other features first. The school district serves families in Mayfield Township, which includes Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village, Gates Mills, and Highland Heights.

Elementary Schools

There are four elementary schools in the Mayfield City School District, which generally¬† have students in grades pre-kindergarten through fifth. Center Elementary School has a student body of just under 400 while Gate Mills Elementary has a student body of 126. The other two elementary schools, Lander and Millridge, are much larger, with student bodies over 500. Students at the elementary schools are encouraged to participate in volunteer programs as well as programs that encourage reading for fun. Another highlight of the district’s elementary schools is that students are introduced to technology early on, with tech classes being offered starting in second grade.

Middle School

Mayfield Middle School has around 600 students in grades six through eight. Students at the school have the chance to participate in a number of activities, from sports teams to student council. For example, in the fall, boys and girls can run cross country, play volleyball, or play football. Girls can play tennis. In the winter, sports options include basketball and swimming while options for spring include softball and boy’s tennis, as well as track and field for boys and girls.

High School

The high school has about 2,000 students in grades 9 through 12. It’s earned a number of national honors, including being on the Advanced Placement District Honor Roll and being recognized as a top high school by US News and World Report. In 2013, the school was named one of the “most challenging high schools” in the country by the Washington Post, which can be great news to parents’ ears, but less great to students’ ears.

Academically, students at Mayfield High School have been performing well in recent years. In 2014, the graduating class was given more than $11 million in combined scholarships and it had the top highest ACT scores in the history of the school. The school’s average, 23.7, was higher than both the state and national averages.

Students also have the chance to hone their athletic and artistic abilities at the school. Several hundred pieces of student artwork are hung at the local hospital each spring, and a number of students took home prizes at the National Scholastic Art Show in 2014. Athletes have 25 sports teams to choose from, and nearly half of the student body plays at least one sport. The school’s wrestling team, soccer team, baseball team, and swimming and diving team have each taken home multiple state championships.

Parents who are looking for a school district that will encourage their children to excel both in the classroom and out should consider looking for apartments in the Mayfield City school district.
